How Are Chronic Diseases Diagnosed?

Chronic diseases are diagnosed through a combination of methods, typically involving a detailed medical history, physical examinations, and various screenings and tests, which provide crucial context for diagnosis. The process depends on the type of chronic disease being diagnosed. Here's a general overview:

1. Medical History: Usually the first step involves the doctor asking about symptoms, family medical history, lifestyle habits (like diet, exercise, smoking, and alcohol use), and previous health issues.

2. Physical Examination: A thorough physical exam might include checking for physical signs of illness (like swelling or redness), measuring vital signs (such as blood pressure and temperature), and evaluating organ function.

3. Laboratory Tests: Blood, urine, and other body fluids can be tested to look for abnormalities that might indicate a chronic disease.

4. Imaging Tests: X-rays, CT scans, MRI scans, ultrasound, and other imaging technologies can provide detailed pictures of the inside of the body to help identify abnormalities like tumors, bone density loss in osteoporosis, or blockages in blood vessels.

5. Biopsy: In some cases, a biopsy (taking a small sample of tissue for examination under a microscope) is necessary to diagnose conditions like cancer.

6. Specialized Tests: Screenings are available for common health conditions like high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes and there are specialized tests, such as a mammography for breast cancer, colonoscopy or stool testing for colorectal cancer, Pap smear for cervical cancer, a computed tomography (CT) scan for lung cancer, an ECG (electrocardiogram) for heart disease, spirometry for lung diseases like COPD, or endoscopy for gastrointestinal diseases.

I have been seeing Dr. Leslee as a patient for a few months now. She’s great, she listens to my concerns with a professional, but relaxed approach. I will continue to refer patients to her because her bedside manner and knowledge set her apart.

Dr McElrath has set the standard all Doctors should strive in patient care. Bedside manner and benevolence in her astute care of myself and wife has been above the board. Patience and LISTENING are the first I recognized in her presence. Extremely knowledgeable in down to earth way. And she handled me being silly quite excellently. 🙃 Dr McElrath we are so grateful. I will definitely be returning, I had a pleasant experience staff are friendly and informative, the hormones really gave me the boost that I needed, I would like to see more advertisements about hormone replacement therapy so that woman can start having conversations about hormones and age related changes without feeling embarrassed.

I love this practice! As an introvert, I appreciate the small office setting without a waiting room filled with other patients; it makes going to the doctor feel more personal because there aren't a bunch of people waiting ahead of you and the doctor isn't stressed out because of being behind on appointments or anything like that. Dr. McElrath is a great doctor and genuinely seems to care about her patients' needs and wellbeings; she's also very laidback, and it's really easy to talk to her about things. She always has great recommendations for products that can improve your health (like vitamins/supplements, foods, and even safer cleaning products) --- she is NOT the kind of doctor who will just push all sorts of medication onto you, which is greatly appreciated. Scheduling is super easy, as it is all online. You can schedule up to 3 weeks out, I believe. This practice does offer times later in the evening for those who work during the day, but available times depend on whether you are a subscription patient or a Medicaid patient. Online, you can also access your patient portal and update certain parts of your profile to keep your doctor in-the-know about your general wellbeing outside of appointments. You can view lab results, documents, questionnaires, and all kinds of other helpful info. It's pretty neat! I am 100% supportive of this doctor's office and truly believe in its ability to help and benefit its patients. If you hate crowded waiting rooms and want a more personalized experience and a doctor who cares (and incorporates online technology into their practice), this is the place for you!
